3 TRENDS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IN THE WORLD OF APPS

The “world of apps” is ever-evolving, with many of our favourite big brand names pumping millions into new innovations and ideas to encourage consumers to spend more time and money.

The 3 times hit season series “Planet of the Apps” illustrates just a small fraction of the number of new apps being developed and competing in the marketplace.

It is predicted that by 2021, more than 352.9 billion apps are downloaded every year, generating an eye-watering £103 billion in revenue through the App Store and Google Play.

Consumers are spending more of their time on their phones and tablets than ever before, demanding more from brands big and small.

So what trends should your business consider incorporating into your existing software?

1. 5G technology

In the UK, all of the major phone networks – Vodafone, EE, Three and O2 – have begun to roll out their 5G technology and we should expect to see this continue through till 2025 as more people move over from 4G.

5G promises speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G, meaning consumers can download a movie in a couple of seconds and stream live content without any interruptions or delays - so prepare for a wave of data hungry devices that are more capable than ever before.

So what does that mean for your apps?

Well you will be able to offer consumers more engaging, interactive, and vibrant content – including video, live streaming and augmented reality concepts that require lots of data to work at their best in real-time.

2. Embracing artificial intelligence

Over the past couple of years, there’s been a dramatic explosion in new artificial intelligence tools and platforms, designed to improve the lives of consumers and make businesses more intelligent and agile.

Facial recognition will continue to evolve and be used within our everyday lives with things like payments, healthcare procedures, and law enforcement to list a few, whilst the blending of AI with the Cloud will make apps more intelligent and powerful, combining multiple technologies.

That’s without thinking about cost efficiencies, data manipulation, speech recognition, analytics and cybersecurity, all offering endless potential for B2B and B2C apps.

During this pandemic we are hearing a lot of buzz around automation and the future of the workplace – integrating AI into your enterprise apps in the upcoming years will no doubt also help you to streamline your firm to deliver a more efficient service to consumers.

3. The rise of “instant” apps

As Android and iOS devices offer more instant apps, i.e. apps that users can open via a link without having to download anything – has been a great way to increase engagement, capture data and ultimately sell more products or services to your end-consumers.

Whether you offer consumers a trial of your core app, allow shoppers to buy a product via a “temporary” e-commerce store or replace your standard apps with cloud-based alternatives that are essentially web apps, there are so many ways to take advantage of this technology.

Not only do instant apps offer the functionality of an app without taking up memory, but they’re cheap to produce, can be updated without app store restrictions, and eliminate the need for downloading or installing – a common friction point between consumers and businesses.

Developers have been able to start working in a way where they are blurring the lines between native apps and web apps and this is just the start of so many exciting opportunities.
