Cloud Services

There are various types of cloud services available that can serve different purposes and they all provide different capabilities. For a business, it is important to decide which type of cloud computing is most suitable for their needs. While all these cloud models deliver services across the internet similarly, they differ in terms of their management, set up and architecture.

Thus, it is important to know what each of these models offers in order to choose the best fit-

  • Public Cloud

The public cloud is a vast array of readily available computing resources such as storage, security, networking, central processing unit and memory on the internet. It is possible for individuals and businesses to rent resources that are hosted on one of the public cloud vendor’s globally distributed and fully managed data centres. The leading providers of this type of cloud computing are Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Benefits of Public clouds-

  • The best feature of public clouds is that the underlying hardware and infrastructure is hosted, owned and maintained by the vendors. This means businesses don't have the need to buy and set up the physical components of their public cloud IT solutions.
  • Furthermore, businesses only need to pay for the services they have a need for and use, rather than owning every aspect of the computing infrastructure themselves. With ups and downs in usage of these services, it is easier for businesses to scale the size of their solutions; this gives them huge flexibility and scalability.

  • Private Cloud

Private Clouds are owned, operated and maintained by individual businesses. Traditionally, they have been physically located at a business's own data centre using its own hardware. However, it is possible for a business to employ a third party provider that will host the private cloud on its infrastructure. In this way, it is similar to public cloud because the resources are in a remotely managed data centre but the third party will only be able to provide a small percentage of services that a public cloud vendor can offer.

Benefits of Private Clouds -

  • If a private cloud is being hosted at a businesses’ own data centre, then there is the benefit of being able to control all the IT solutions themselves.
  • As a business has complete control over their IT solutions in a private cloud model, it is possible to tailor their cloud computing approach based on specific needs, internal processes and changes that may regularly occur.
  • Sometimes, there may be stringent security and data legislation that insist on some crucial data and resources to be kept inside a business's private security boundary, in this scenario, it is helpful to have a private cloud setup which can host such features.

  • Hybrid Cloud

A hybrid cloud by its name is a combination of private and public cloud model elements that are connected over the internet through virtual private networks (VPN) or another dedicated private channel. A typical example of this combination would look like this - using unlimited storage on a public cloud and using your private cloud solutions for data processing or businesses could extend their computer network into the public cloud to save having to buy additional permanent hardware.

Benefits of Hybrid Cloud

  • A Hybrid cloud offers benefits of both public and private cloud models.
  • It makes Cloud Bursting possible. In this approach, all the applications are supported through the private cloud but when the demand increases and the private cloud can no longer support operations, it is the public cloud which is used to support and supplement the private cloud.
  • Businesses can also use a mix of both private and public models at the same time, for example, a business can store mission-critical applications and information in the private cloud under increased security and the non-mission-critical applications can be stored in the public cloud segment.
  • This is a cost-effective way for businesses to increase computing capacity on demand while still utilising the already paid or on-premise resources.

Knowing about the different types of cloud computing solutions and their respective benefits is going to help businesses choose the right model for that suits their requirements.
