Ella Moores: My Internship Experience with Savant

Posted by Ella Moores on 27/07/2021

Back

Completing an internship in a foreign country amidst a global pandemic may seem like an unusual choice. However, for Ella Moores joining Savant has been one of her best learning experiences yet. Here, she reflects on the 8 weeks she has spent as part of our team…

About Me

I am about to start my last year at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, USA studying marketing and public relations as a part of the Sigmund Weis School of Business.

One of the reasons I came to Susquehanna was my dream to study abroad, as each SU graduate is required to participate in cross-cultural learning before graduation. Thanks to the generosity of the Eric Stein Fund at the SWSB, I won a scholarship to take an internship abroad.

Why I Chose Savant

I began by finding a study abroad provider and submitting my CV to share with potential placements. After a couple of interviews, Savant stood out because of the innovative nature of their marketing techniques (have you heard of a recruitment company hosting a virtual comedy night?!) and the positive team culture I observed in my research.

In my first conversation with Savant’s Founder & Managing Director, Mark Sheldon, he recalled the importance of an early internship and how that learning experience informed his career. From that moment, I knew the Savant team would challenge me while supporting my professional growth.

Project Experience

In my two short months, I have learned how to use a new database, created LinkedIn campaigns, designed graphics, written blogs, developed promotional email campaigns and completed market research.

My favourite project was working with our Operations Controller to promote Savant’s participation in Action for Children’s annual charity event, Boycott Your Bed. Leading up to the sleep out fundraiser, I developed each of our LinkedIn posts and mailings – including copy and graphics. I was also able to take part in the event and boycott my bed on 9th July, and it was particularly fulfilling to see all of our work pay off in the donations raised for this amazing cause.

What I Have Learned

An eye-opening experience was unlearning my social media voice from a previous internship in a different market sector. I had to adjust my tone to a more professional yet confident LinkedIn style to best fit Savant’s audience. It was an important reminder to know your audience and tailor your perspective.

I particularly enjoyed joining my colleagues in the office and seeing the Savant team in action. Seeing the day-to-day conversations and tasks gave me a better sense of the company I represented in external communications. It was not only a window into operations, but also a test of my communication and general soft skills. I had to adapt to a different culture (as well as picking up a few new British colloquial terms!) to keep up with the fast-paced business environment.

I also now have a better understanding of where I would like to work one day. I was excited to see the impact I could make in a smaller yet growing team and am now considering the possibility of working abroad. With the rise of digital marketing, having a more global mindset will assist me in my career and make me a more well-rounded professional as I approach graduation in May 2022.

Thank You

Finally, thank you to Savant for welcoming and investing in me, and those who have supported this adventure along the way. I am so grateful for the opportunity and the chance to learn from this team.
