New Year's Resolutions? UK set to become world leader within tech IPO, even after Brexit

Happy New Years 2021! 

As everyone pans out their New Year’s Resolutions at the start of this year, we can look forward to exciting news for the tech industry within the UK marketplace. 

While the first half of last year as the pandemic broke out and put everything on hold, we began to see activity re-emerge by the end of the summer before a significant uptick in the last quarter. 

Following on from last year's events, initial public offerings (IPO) activity within Greater London is now projected to surge and boom this year. 

Remarkably more than 40% of total capital raised by commercial companies within Europe in 2020 through IPOs was in London, according to EY’s IPO tracker. 

Scott McCubbin, EY UKI IPO leader, has stated “Looking to the year ahead, we can expect 2021 to be a very strong year for the UK IPO market. The uptick in IPO activity may well intensify the competition for investment, placing greater emphasis on preparing early for IPO and raising profile with investors.”

This not only signals the credibility of the UK to build on its position as a world leader and become the preferred location to IPO companies on the London Stock Exchange, even after Brexit. 

Our London investment banks are currently lining up public listings of firms where their sales soared last year, some of which include Moonpig, Deliveroo, cyber security firm Darktrace, and online review site Trustpilot.

This is great news for the UK as previous public opinion had some skepticisms that London only understands old economy businesses and that tech firms need to go to the US to succeed. 

With this well received news, we can expect to see a quick cluster of high growth amongst tech businesses on the London Stock Exchange, which will then lead to a real tech community building out year upon year.
