For years, expertise was enough. The deeper the technical knowledge, the stronger the perceived value. Experience compounded. Specialisation differentiated.
That logic still matters, but it is no longer what separates the strongest leaders.
In 2026, information is easier to access, faster to analyse and increasingly supported by technology. AI can summarise reports, surface insights, model scenarios and reduce the time spent gathering information. What it cannot consistently do is determine what matters most. This is where value is shifting, not away from expertise, but towards judgement.
The ability to interpret information in context, distinguish between noise and signal and make decisions with imperfect visibility is becoming increasingly valuable. This is particularly evident in senior leadership hiring, where businesses are not short of information. Most have more data than they know what to do with.
What they increasingly need are people who can apply judgement to that information. Leaders who can challenge assumptions without slowing momentum, make decisions without waiting for complete certainty and recognise that in periods of growth, pressure or transformation, clarity rarely arrives all at once.
The strongest leaders are often not those with the greatest technical depth. They are the ones who know what matters, what can wait and what requires action.
This is changing how capability is assessed. Experience still matters. Technical depth still matters. Increasingly, however, they are becoming the entry point rather than the differentiator.
What businesses are increasingly trying to assess is harder to measure. Can this person make good decisions under pressure? Can they balance pace with quality? Can they apply experience without becoming constrained by it?
These qualities rarely sit clearly within a CV. They become visible through judgement, behaviour and track record during periods of uncertainty.
This has implications for hiring. Many interview processes still favour certainty: familiar backgrounds, linear careers and technical confidence. All remain important, but they are not always predictive of leadership performance.
Because as information becomes more accessible, the premium increasingly sits elsewhere.
Good judgement is becoming harder to find and increasingly more valuable when it is.
