The way in which we interact with technology has come a long way; and with it, the role of UI and UI Designers. Gone are the days of big desktops and keyboards. We’ve moved to tactile screens on smartphones and tablets that allow us to have access to virtually anything at the tip of our fingers. All of this has been possible thanks to the way in which UI has applied user-centric designs that allow everyday users to interact with technology. However, the tech industry is an ever-changing space. So it’s no surprise that the way in which UI designs are developed will most likely change again. Here are some of the trends that could be seen for UI design in the coming years:
Big Images and Type Designs
Large images play an important role in capturing and retaining user’s attention while also giving a neat appearance to designs. Large elements like images, graphics and texts are easier to read which enhances the user experience. The main goal here is to increase readability, and to retain users’ attention rather than distracting them with overly loaded fonts. Likewise, UI is moving more towards minimalist and simplistic typographies.
Voice User Interface (VUI)
Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant is just the beginning of a trend that will continue to be seen in UI. The capabilities of Voice User Interface (VUI) have already been seen in devices and technologies, and there’s more coming in the next decade. VUI will be a preferred way to boost user engagement of mobile apps and websites. This will allow for a more accessible, efficient, and easier way of interacting with technology. Since it will allow users to use their devices and interact even if they are not able to physically access them.
More 3D Design, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
3D Design will be a tool used to lure customers while also enhancing efficiency in businesses. The reason behind this is simple. 3D catches your attention and creates a more immersive interaction that pictures are not always able to convey or transmit. Accompanied with that we’ll also be seeing more of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) will allow UI designers to create more interactions that can be catered to different audiences. This will change the way in which user interfaces and users interact in systems, applications and websites.
Gesture Recognition
The shift towards a screen-less experience will also warrant the growth of gesture recognition. We’ve already seen the rise of facial recognition softwares. In the future it might be common to also see actions such as raising a finger, moving the eyeballs, tilting your head or blinking to allow users to interact with their devices, apps, and websites.
Businesses and UI Designers alike need to be on the pulse for constant changes in the UI field since this will allow them to improve their digital interactions with their users. However, it is also important to highlight that every user is different and therefore, not all trends or strategies will have the same impact. Undergoing profound research is crucial to truly narrow down your business’ customer base and the way in which their online interactions can be improved. It can be said that, in a digital world, there is a strong correlation between the way in which users are able to interact with a business’ website and/or applications, and the organisation’s growth. Curating a good UI design that will be able to take your user’s needs into consideration will set your business apart and strengthen your customers’ loyalty, however, to have a good UI design for your business you must also have a good UI designer or design team. Which is why finding the right tech professionals is now more important than ever.
