With the rise of Virtual and Augmented reality, it seems that our relationship with technology is evolving once again and moving towards a more immersive interaction known, as of 2021, as the Metaverse. A term that before that year was not something that appeared in the cultural zeitgeist but it’s becoming more prevalent as the role of technology and consequently digital design is shifting.
One way to describe the Metaverse is a digital ecosystem or a parallel world where instead of connecting to the Internet, users will now be able to be inside it via virtual identities or avatars. This changes the dynamic between users, technology, and products in the digital space. In the era of the Metaverse, users will no longer be passive characters but players that are in constant interaction with the digital ecosystem.
The role of UX/UI Design will be to find a way to make the Metaverse accessible for all. Aspects like ethical design where users’ well-being should be the top priority will be imminent. When designing for the Metaverse diversity, accessibility, and inclusivity should be very important areas to focus on. Designers will now have to place more value on storytelling to be able to connect in a more meaningful way with their players and create experiences that will allow players to interact with the products in a more immersive and impactful way.
The presence of 3D Design is perhaps the most important area since through this, players will no longer to see the internet through their screens but be able to experience it through virtual reality and navigate spaces such as ships or offices, which will therefore warrant the need to translate 2D design skills previously used in the UX/UI space into 3D tools to create immersive spaces and experiences.
Organisations and designers alike now must find ways to translate the work that they’ve done in the digital design space from a 2D stand point and adapt it or modify it to a 3D space and all that the Metaverse will mean for players, technology, and design.
