Top 10 Cybersecurity threats in 2022! (Part 1)

Experts predict that over time, cyber security threats will become increasingly sophisticated and more and more expensive to deal with. It is expected that the global costs of cyber crime will reach $10.5 trillion in 2025 as opposed to $3 trillion in 2015.
Taking proactive measures to avoid cybersecurity threats is important; here are the top cybersecurity threats that experts believe will come up in 2022 -

  • Third Party exposure

It’s easy for cyber criminals to get around security systems by hacking into less-protected networks that belong to third parties with privileged access to the hacker’s primary targets.

In 2022, these risks will increase because more and more businesses are open to hiring independent contractors/freelancers to do work that would’ve been done by full-time employees before. These third parties have access to critical information and end up providing unprotected access routes to their data for cybercriminals.

  • Social Engineering Attacks

Social engineering is one of the most dangerous hacking techniques, majorly because it relies on human mistakes and not technical errors. This makes it even more dangerous as it is easier to trick humans than a fully equipped security system. According to Verizon’s Data Breach Investigations Report, 85% of all data breaches involve human interaction.

In 2022, these attacks are set to increase. For example between October 2020 and April 2021, cryptocurrency based attacks grew by 200% and they are likely to remain a prominent attack as bitcoin and other blockchain technology based currencies gain traction.

  • Configuration Mistakes

Even professional security systems contain errors in how they have been installed and set up. In a series of 268 trials conducted by the cybersecurity software company Rapid7, 80% of tests encountered an exploitable misconfiguration. In 2022, with volatile financial and social environments globally, these misconfigurations are expected to increase in number and intensity leaving data open to threats.

  • Poor Cybersecurity Hygiene

Cyber hygiene refers to regular habits and practices around technology use such as avoiding unprotected wifi networks and implementing safeguards like a VPN or multi-factor authentication. But most people rarely practice cybersecurity hygiene.

In 2022, with an increase in home working, systems protected by weak passwords are getting accessed through unprotected home networks and workers are logging in from personal computers, which are more likely to be lost or stolen.

  • Cloud Vulnerabilities

One might think that the cloud would become more secure over time, but the opposite is true. According to Gartner, cloud security is the fastest growing segment in the cybersecurity market, with an increase from $595 trillion in 2020 to $841 trillion in 2021. New developments in cloud security like zero-trust cloud security architecture will continue to gain popularity in 2022.

As the threats to cybersecurity increase in number and intensity, it is becoming more and more important for organisations to invest in the best protective measures and this also means great cybersecurity talent.
