The future is now. We may not have flying cars… yet; however, technology that could’ve easily appeared in science fiction movies, programmes or books years ago is now a reality. It seems that as each day goes by, we keep seeing more of the capabilities and possibilities that Artificial Intelligence (AI) has to offer. AI is constantly becoming a bigger part of user interactions and experience across various industries, and has even begun to make its way into daily life. The most recent example is ChatGPT.
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that performs tasks or answers questions asked by users. The interesting thing is that with each task or question, ChatGPT continues to learn what users mean and better tune its answers to provide human-quality responses. The database of information it has is so extensive that it is able to write scripts, speeches and emails, code, and even have philosophical conversations.
Are we bringing back the is-AI-going-to-take-over-a-designer’s-job conversation? Yes. Yes, we are. In previous blogs we’ve talked about the role of AI in design. To provide a brief recap on this: although AI has been making its way into the tasks of design, it does not mean that it will take over the entire design job that designers currently do. However, AI can be a useful tool to be able to go through the design process in a more effective way, and be able to do repetitive tasks swiftly; which allows the designer to focus their time on other steps.
ChatGPT can be a great ally to have in the UX Writing process. It can often be a struggle for designers and can become a bit trickier to decide on what or how to write content on a product with stakeholder’s interference. Using ChatGPT can provide feedback into how to write sections such as rating scales or messages within an app or website. Deciding between options for a designer can be complicated but using ChatGPT can make the writing process faster and easier. It can also help in writing answers and indications for chatbots used in online sites and applications. Thus finding ways to develop a chatbot that uses a more natural and engaging language to improve user experience.
Another use for ChatGPT is to help in generating design ideas and concepts. Designers can feed ChatGPT information of their user’s needs and characteristics and ChatGPT will provide answers and design concepts that then can be refined and developed. This can be especially useful if designers are working on a project where there are tight deadlines or when a designer might be struggling in finding inspiration and creativity. The technology can also be used in usability testing. Due to its human-like responses, talking with ChatGPT can be a tool in helping designers get a glimpse into how a user might interact with a product in different contexts or scenarios, and help to identify any issues or pain points that could be improved. ChatGPT’s wide bank of information can make for a very interesting way to create user personas and user journey maps, since it can gather insights into a person’s needs and behaviours.
So the possibilities of ChatGPT in the design space looks promising and might make a designer’s job faster and more enjoyable since it takes away the small and routine parts, as well as the ones that might sometimes become a struggle, leaving more room to focus on other elements of the design process. However, it is worth noting that just like other AI technologies, ChatGPT is still developing. For instance, its data bank is limited in information and in some topics, may not be up to date. Additionally, there have to be measures and information that has to be known in order to ensure the best use out of this technology. In order to use ChatGPT, one should clearly know what requirements and restrictions there are, and provide the correct inputs in order to get a response that aligns with what the designer requires. Otherwise, the information may not be correct. Also, ChatGPT can help in the small ro early steps of the design process but shouldn’t be fully relied on for more complex tasks.
